BOTANIC GARDEN VARIATIONS CRESCENT DISH - COTTON FLOWER
Unusual Rare Item - Retired Variations Pattern - Retired Flower!
|
I am happy to present a mint Portmeirion BG crescent dish featuring a
Barbados Cotton Flower or Gossypium Barbadense motif. The crescent dish shape was retired
several years ago and is no longer available.
This dish is especially rare because it is in the discontinued Variations
pattern. Crescent dishes in Variations, usually accented with sprigs of Forget-Me-Not and/or Rhododendron, were never made for the general Botanic Garden catalog. It was made for sale exclusively at Portmeirion's factory store in the UK and has an oval green 2nds ID mark.
The dish is in mint clean condition with no flaws or crazing and no indication that is ever was used.
The Cotton Flower was originally used in 1972 on oatmeal bowls, then on
bread and butter plates in 1976, and finally retired in 1988. The motif
was based on an antique 1830 botany book Flora Conspicua by
Richard Morris and William Clarke.
The Cotton Flower has gone through several different insect arrangements
over the years. Also, there are varieties with one, two, three, and four
flower heads. This item has three flower heads which is one of the last
arrangements before the flower was retired.

An excellent retired and hard to find Cotton Flower Variations crescent dish! |
The bottom carries a oval 2nd's ID mark. This ID can mean a quality
second, but is also used on samples or one of a kind items and I bought
it with another dish marked 'sample'. I do not see
any flaws on this nice dish. The dish style was never offered in
Portmeirion's normal catalog.

The bottom is marked with an oval green ID mark and is likely a sample piece
as mentioned above. Please click the link to the right if you would like to learn more about
