BIRDS OF BRITAIN ROLLING PIN FEATURES SIX BIRDS
Retired And Nice With Coffee Cup Birds - Accent Birds On Handle!

I am happy to offer a sought after Portmeirion Birds Of Britain rolling pin featuring six birds seen on coffee cups or oatmeal bowls. Some of the birds were retired years ago many years before the Birds Of Britain range was retired. Portmeirion rolling pins were discontinued years and years ago and this BOB rolling pin has a green band and plastic stoppers on each end.

There are just a few short, very clean and VERY hard to see lines of crazing. It is in excellent shiny condition with no signs of use and has bright colors on the bird transfers. Please be sure to look below to see a full description.

Portmeirion Birds Of Britain Rolling Pin

Some of the birds, like the Marsh Titmouse and Willow Warbler, have been retired for years.

Portmeirion Birds Of Britain Rolling Pin Side 1
---> Sedge Warbler and Redstart <---

Portmeirion Birds Of Britain Rolling Pin Side 2
---> Marsh Titmouse and Willow Warbler <---

Portmeirion Birds Of Britain Rolling Pin Side 3
---> Great Titmouse and Robin <---

The Birds Of Britain pattern illustrations were taken from the 'Natural History Of British Birds' by Edward Donovan which was printed in 1794.

This item has a hollow center and can be filled with cold water to make rolling pastry easier. However, very cold temperatures might cause crazing on the item.

Condition Button
Size 14" long and about 3" thick
Transfer All transfers are free of flaws and are nice and bright
Ground Very white
Glaze Very shiny glaze with no wear. Mostly to the left and right side of the bird transfers there are a few, maybe a dozen, short lines of clean crazing. Common on older Portmeirion. The crazing is very hard to see and I only could see it in a bright photoflood light.
Chips/Cracks None
Stains None
Use Marks None
Other Comments Portmeirion rolling pins are hollow to hold ice water. At each end there are two plastic stoppers. They are original Portmeirion, minty, and show no signs that they were ever removed.

A rare rolling pin for your BOB collection!

A rolling pin box from my files says:

The Portmeirion Rolling Pin has been specially designed for the serious pastry maker. For "Puff" and "Flaky" pastry, "Mille Feuilles", "Strudel" etc. which demand a cool touch: fill with iced water. This should make the use of a marble slab unnecessary. When making "Hot-Water curst" pastry for "hand raised" pork, or veal and ham pies, etc. hot water should be used instead.

Since this is an older item, it probably would be best to avoid temperature extremes (ice water) to avoid crazing.

It does not carry any Portmeirion ID mark. I have never seen a rolling pin with a backstamp.
