A. E. GRAY'S POTTERY 'VANCOUVER' SOUVENIR TRINKET BOX
Vintage Gray's Box With Verse - Great Condition!
|
I am pleased to offer a 5 by 4 inch vintage AE Gray's Pottery trinket box featuring a mermaid, seahorses,
and a few other sea creatures. With a verse, it appears to be a souvenir box made for Vancouver Canada.
It is in overall nice condition with just a few lines of clean crazing here and there but does have a small chip on
one corner of the lid and a tiny spot of rough glaze on the edge of the lid. Please be sure to look below
to see lots of photos and a complete description...
Apparently made for sale in Vancouver Canada, there is a saying on the box.

A. E. Gray's Pottery was established in 1912 at Stoke-On-Trent, moved to Handley, and moved back to Stoke and existed from 1934 until 1961 when it was
bought by Portmeirion Potteries. Well known for their hand painted items,
marked with a sailing ship backstamp, did not manufacture the basic pottery themselves.
Blanks were purchased elsewhere and hand painted by Gray's decorators. Lustre
wares were a specialty and often seen painted with silver resist, copper, and other
lustre finishes.

Size |
About 5" by 4" across the top, 1-1/8" high without the lid
|
Transfer |
A deep blue color and very nice with no skips or loss of paint on any of the design
|
Ground |
Very white
.
|
Glaze |
Nice and shiny overall with just a few lines of very clean crazing here and there. I could only see it under a very bright light.
Along the back edge of the lid there is a very tiny pin-point sized spot of rough glaze. It looks to
me like a factory flaw because of some disrupted glaze around it. It is very minor.
|
Chips/Cracks |
As seen in the photo above, there is a small chip on the edge of the lid. Seen mostly from the bottom
is barely visible from the top.
|
Stains |
None, except for a very, very little amount of shelf wear on the unglazed bottom foot where it sits.
|
Use Marks |
None, no scratches or other damage
|
Other Comments |
An excellent example of a Gray's Pottery collectible trinket box!

It is fully marked on the bottom with a black Clipper Ship, made in Stoke On
Trent, ID Mark. There is also a hand written number which is probably a number assigned to the blank or pattern.
