BOTANIC GARDEN COMPOTE - SPANISH GUM CISTUS
Retired Double Version Of Cistus - Mint Condition!
|
I am pleased to offer a Botanic Garden 8 inch compote pedestal dish in the Spanish
Gum Cistus or Cistaceae motif. The Spanish Gum Cistus was introduced in 1972
on B & B dishes and retired in 1985 (called White Cistus after 1985 with no name written on motif).
This Cistus version on this compote is a rare double version with two flowers
instead of the usual single. The double Cistus was a part of the salad plate set for a short time.
It is in excellent condition and very shiny with few, if any, signs of use. The
transfer is exceptionally crisp and glaze very shiny!
(The photo above was overexposed in the camera and the green laurel at the top looks pale.
The laurel is nice and dark in person.)
The compote shape also was retired many years ago, making this a
very desirable Botanic Garden piece.

The Spanish Gum Cistus was an original 1972 bread and butter plate motif and retired in
1985. It can be found on many Portmeirion shapes and is also rarely seen on salad
plates in a 'Double' form, as on this dish. When the Spanish Gum Cistus was retired from
plates it continued to be used on other shapes such as vases and soup
tureens. However, after 1985, it was called the White Cistus and did not carry a
common or latin name. The design was inspired by image in a 1824 book,The Universal
Herbal by Thomas Green.
