PORTMEIRION LLANELLY COCKEREL 7 INCH CANISTER
Very Rare - Exclusively Hand Painted For Pugh Brothers - Excellent!
|
I am pleased to offer a very hard to find hand painted Portmeirion Llanelli 'Ceiriog
Cockerel' 7 inch high wooden lid canister. There is a Cockerel on the front and flower on the back. This is a special Welsh Illanelli pattern
made for Pugh Brothers Furniture during the 1990's.
It is in excellent condition with a lid that seals well and has overall nice
varnish! Mentioned to be completely accurate, there are a few hard to see and minor flaws so
please be sure to look below for a complete description. We also have a some links to
a few informative Llanelli art web sites.

The Llanelli Cockerel jar was commissioned by Pugh Brothers at about the time that Portmeirion's Welsh Dresser
pattern was newly introduced. The original Welsh Cockerel rooster dinnerware design goes back to
the 1800's. Llanelli ware, in general, is a very old Welsh folk art pottery pattern made
as early as the 1820's.
Here are a few links you can see to learn more about this type of Welsh art. The page will open in a new window.
A few photos of the Llanelli Cockerel
On this site, the pictured Cockerel plate is said to have been painted in the
early 1900's. This example looks very much like the Portmeirion Pugh plate
with a spongeware border. Portmeirion did paint a small number of early spongeware border
plates that were discontinued due to production problems.
However, the plate on this site is almost certainly not Portmeirion as the decoration is not on Portmeirion dinner plate shape.

None, except for one shallow, narrow and hard to see scratch in the white area. It is hard to tell if it is a factory or man made flaw.

Other Comments |
The lid is in excellent condition with smooth varnish overall and only two
small spots where the varnish is worn. One is probably factory on the edge and another is on the
top. Quite minor for a wooden lid of this age. The gasket still holds a nice seal.
A very, very rare Pugh Brothers Llanelli Cockerel canister hand painted by Portmeirion!
