BOTANIC GARDEN RED PEPPERS SALAD PLATE
Very Nice Older Rare And Retired Plate - Shows Some Use
|
I am pleased to offer a retired Botanic Garden salad plate in the Red Peppers or
Capsicum Rubrum motif.
This dish does show some wear with crazing in spots and, while still has glaze over the transfer, it is starting to dull. However,
there is lots of life left in the plate and would be an ideal plate to add to an existing collection
that has been used. Please be sure to look below for a complete description.
The Red Peppers motif was an
original 1972 motif on salad plates and retired years ago in 1984.
It was inspired by image in an 1824 book,The Universal Herbal
by Thomas Green.

This plate has a pale green '4' near the plant name indicating that it was
made in the late 1970's or early 1980's when Portmeirion was using a numbering
scheme for motifs.
Size |
8-1/2" across
|
Transfer |
Still a fairly nice transfer with slight fading with the red in the pepper faded a bit to
orange. There are a few little cuts to the transfer with one a little bigger than a pin-point
on the red pepper and two or three very tiny pin point cuts to the green leaves. Sideways in a bright light, some faint silver lines can be seen.
|
Ground |
Very white
|
Glaze |
There is some crazing in spots, especially on the left side wall. The crazing on the wall has a grayish
cast to the crazing lines. There is some loss of glaze over the transfer, but still has quite a bit of
glaze remaining.
It probably would be best to use the plate for dry foods only and not let it sit for a long time in dishwater.
|
Chips/Cracks |
None
|
Stains |
None, just some pale gray crazing lines as mentioned above
|
Use Marks |
None except some common stacking marks from another plate stacked on top
|
Other Comments |
Excellent opportunity to add an extra Red Peppers plate to your table set!

The back is marked with a very large Susan Williams-Ellis Trophy ID mark used from the late 1970's to early 1980's.
