BOTANIC GARDEN ORCHID SPICE JAR - RARE CUT OFF VERSION
Very Rare Orchid Variation - Factory 2nd, But Very Nice!
|
I am pleased to offer a Botanic Garden Orchid three inch high spice jar
with a wooden lid. This motif is one of the six original oatmeal bowl flowers
but is a quite rare variation. It is a 'cut-off' version, used only around 1980, with the purple bloom removed and with
a different arrangement of insects. I think it was meant to be applied to areas where less space was available for the transfer.
The canister is in overall excellent condition with NO crazing and excellent varnish on the wooden lid! This
jar is a factory 2nd due to a glaze flaw just above the flower. Please be sure to look below and see the full description and more photos...
The Orchid flower was one of the four original oatmeal motifs,
introduced in 1972 and retired early in 1978, that did not have a
Latin name printed next to the common name. The other three unnamed oatmeal
motifs were retired in the same year. The design was inspired by an
image in the 1840 botany book La Flore des Dames by A. Jacquemart.
The motif on this spice jar is a rare version with the top purple bloom removed and also has a different insect
arrangement than the more common original motif.

Other Comments |
There is no wear on the original straight sided wooden lid as is so common on older BG canister
lids and the varnish is not dried or cracked. The sealing gasket is a bit dry and could use
a replacement. Replacement seals should be available directly from Portmeirion Pottery.
An original Botanic Garden rare variant of the Orchid spice jar that is so hard to find!

The bottom carries a mustard colored oval 2nds ID mark. As mentioned and photographed above, there is a glaze flaw above the flower.
