BOTANIC GARDEN CANTERBURY BELLS Or REDSTAR SPICE JAR - ORIGINAL VERSION
Long Ago Retired Original Oatmeal Bowl Flower - Nice, But Some Crazing And Use

I am pleased to offer a Botanic Garden Canterbury Bells or Red Star three inch high spice jar with a wooden lid. This motif is one of the six original oatmeal bowl flowers and is the original motif design. The Canterbury Bells was retired along with three other unnamed motifs way back in 1976.

The canister is in very good condition with very clean crazing in spots and some pale staining near the bottom. Please be sure to look below and see the full description and more photos...

The Canterbury Bells flower was one of the four original oatmeal motifs, introduced in 1972 and retired early in 1978, that did not have a Latin name printed next to the common name. The other three unnamed oatmeal motifs were retired in the same year. The design was inspired by an image in the 1840 botany book La Flore des Dames by A. Jacquemart.

Condition Button
Size A little over 3" high without the lid and 2-3/8" across the bottom
Transfer Excellent bright colors with no flaws seen
Ground Very white
Glaze There is some hard to see and very clean crazing in spots. It is hard to see on the outside and I did not see any on the inside, but maybe should only be used with very dry foods.
Chips/Cracks None
Stains There is some shelf wear on the bottom and some pale staining on the sides that extend upwards from the bottom by about 1/8". I could not catch it in a photo. Otherwise, I do not see any other stains.
Use Marks None, except crazing and staining as mentioned above
Other Comments There is some wear and dry areas on the original straight sided wooden lid as is so common on older BG canister lids. The sealing gasket, also, is a little loose and dry. Replacement gaskets should be available if you email Portmeirion Pottery.

An original Canterbury Bells spice jar in nice overall condition!

The bottom carries A 1st Trophy ID 'Copyright Design' ID mark on the bottom. The image below is borrowed from another almost identical jar. I tried to catch the bottom edge stains in a photo but they were too pale.
