BOTANIC GARDEN 5.5 INCH CISTUS FRUIT BOWL - UNIQUE!
One Of A Kind Decoration - Great Condition!
|
I am pleased to offer a unique Botanic Garden 5.5 inch fruit bowl that
carries a single White Cistus (Spanish Gum) or Cistus Ladaniferus Cistaceae motif. The
flower inside is a single flower without a name and was likely made after the
Cistus was retired in 1985. On the outside, there is a unique arrangement of
the Forget-Me-Not that I've never seen on any other fruit bowl.
This bowl is a one of a kind item not offered in the general catalog. It has
a 2nds green oval backstamp on the bottom which is typical on trial or sample one of a
kind type items. I do not see any flaws in the glaze, transfer, or pottery
and it is in very clean near mint condition.
The Spanish Gum Cistus was an original 1972 bread and butter plate motif and retired in
1985. It can be found on many Portmeirion shapes and is also rarely seen on salad
plates in a 'Double' form. When the Spanish Gum Cistus was retired from
plates it continued to be used on other shapes such as vases and soup
tureens. However, after 1985, it was called the White Cistus and did not carry either a
common or latin name. The design was inspired by image in a 1824 book,The Universal
Herbal by Thomas Green.

This version of the Forget-Me-Not decoration is unique on bowls. It is more like the Forget-Me-Not used on the Botanic Garden Variations sub-pattern.
---> Outside Forget-Me-Not Motif <---
The Forget-Me-Not flower is an
original 1972 coffee cup motif and remains in production today. It was
based on an illustration by William Clarke in Mrs. Hey's botany
book,Moral of Flowers.

A very unique and minty retired Cistus fruit bowl! |
This bowl has an oval or seconds ID mark. The oval ID mark is often used for
items not in the product catalog, sales samples, or special decoration items made for sale
exclusively for sale at Portmeirion's factory store.
This fruit bowl motif design definitely was not offered as a normal production item.
