I am pleased to offer a rare vintage Portmeirion Penny Plain Pantomime Characters shaving mug produced in the 1960's. There is a different character on each side of the mug as shown in the photos below.

It is in overall condition with common overall fine and very clean crazing. Of note, there are two small tight hairline cracks on one side. Please be sure to see the very detailed description below.


Pantomime Characters was inspired by copper engraving designs found at Pollock's Toy Museum - Theater. Pollock's business was started in the mid 1800's and ended in 1944 during WWII. Susan created these transfers based on material found at the Pollock company. The book Portmeirion Pottery by Steven Jenkins and Stephen McKay give an excellent description of Penny Plain characters on page 23.

Size	About 4" high, 5-1/4" from front to back handle, and 2-1/2" across the bottom foot
Transfer	Both transfers are excellent with no missing or rubbed paint
Ground	Very white
Glaze	There is overall clean and fine crazing present. Hard to see because it is so clean. Crazing is found on most vintage Portmeirion pieces. Aside from crazing, there are no glaze flaws seen.
Chips/Cracks	There are two small tight hairline cracks near the spout on one side. They are hard to see and took some effort getting lighting just right to catch in a photo. One is about 2" long and the other is about 1".
Stains	None. Quite clean both inside and outside

The bottom is marked with a full Portmeirion 'Pantomime Characters' Penny Plain backstamp. I believe the number on the left was assigned to the shaving mug blank shape.
