BOTANIC GARDEN ROLLING PIN - MANCHINEEL TREE
Rare Motif - Original Dinner Plate Plant - Retired Long Ago!

I am happy to present a Botanic Garden rolling pin in the Manchineel Tree or Hippomane Mancinella motif. The Manchineel Tree motif was retired many years ago in 1983.

This rolling pin is in overall very nice condition with no crazing and few, if any, signs of use. As common on older Portmeirion, there are a few little flaws in the transfer so please be sure to see the complete description and photos below.

Portmeirion Botanic Garden Manchineel Tree Rolling Pin

One of the most sought after and rare Botanic Garden flowers, the Manchineel Tree flower was an original dinner plate motif, introduced in 1972 and retired in 1983. It was inspired by image in a 1824 book,The Universal Herbal by Thomas Green.

During the late 1970's and early 1980's, Portmeirion used a numbering system on some motifs. This item has a green number 5 on the left side of the plant's name.

This item has a hollow center and can be filled with cold water to make rolling pastry easier. However, on older Portmeirion, extremes in temperature can cause crazing.

Condition Button
Size 14" long and about 3" thick
Transfer Excellent transfer color and thick glaze over the transfer. Common on older Botanic Garden, there are a few factory bubbles in the transfer and one transfer cut. The flaws can be seen in the center of the photo below in darker green leaves.

Also, there is a blue spot that looks like a speck of transfer, about 1/16", that can be seen in the photo above just over the 'i' in the common plant name. And there is another very, very tiny blue speck in the left side white area to the upper right side of the plant and way too small to catch in a photo.
Ground Very white
Glaze No crazing! Exceptionally shiny. There are a few tiny glaze bumps or stilt marks on one end from where it sat during manufacture.
Chips/Cracks None
Stains None
Use Marks None
Other Comments There are two original plastic 'bungs' on each side to hold in the ice water. They are in excellent condition with just a bit of evidence on the sides that they were removed at one time.

This is a very nice example of the old rare and retired Machineel Tree dinner plate motif!
