BOTANIC GARDEN SPANISH GUM CISTUS OVAL PLATTER - DOUBLE FORM
Very Rare Double Form Of Cistus - NO CRAZING!
|
I am pleased to offer a Botanic Garden 13 inch oval plate that carries a rare double form of the
Spanish Gum Cistus or Cistus Ladaniferus-Cistaceae motif. The
double Cistus was used on salad plates for a brief time in the late 1980's or early 1990's.
This platter is in overall excellent condition with no crazing! There are a few very minor signs of use so
please be sure to see the full description below.
The Spanish Gum Cistus was an original 1972 bread and butter plate motif and retired in
1985. It can be found on many Portmeirion shapes and is also rarely seen on salad
plates in a 'Double' form. When the Spanish Gum Cistus was retired from
plates it continued to be used on other shapes such as vases and soup
tureens. However, after 1985, it was called the White Cistus and did not carry either a
common or latin name. The design was inspired by image in a 1824 book,The Universal
Herbal by Thomas Green.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This platter is the older style that has a flat rim and angled slant
from the rim to the face. There is also an newer style that has a has a smooth round transition from the rim to the
face. If you have the newer style, this plate may not stack properly with it.

About 13" by 9-1/2" across the top

Transfer |
Perfect with no fading or cuts
|
Ground |
Very white

Glaze |
Very shiny and thick glaze with NO crazing. Crazing is all too often found on plates of this age.
The only small glaze issue I see is an area, less than 1/8" across, near the top of the face right
against the wall. It is a factory flaw where the glaze is disrupted. Very hard to see and quite minor.

Chips/Cracks |
None
|
Stains |
None

Use Marks |
There are only some shallow, narrow, and very hard to see stacking marks from rubbing of another
plate stacked on top. Found in the white area only and could only see when looking closely and sideways
in a bright light. Otherwise, there are no other signs of use like silver lines or major cuts.
