BOTANIC GARDEN COMPOTE PEDESTAL DISH 8 INCH - EASTERN HYACINTH
Unusual Flower To Find On This Pedestal Dish Shape - Great Condition!
|
I am pleased to offer a one of a kind Botanic Garden 8 inch compote pedestal dish in the original version of the
Eastern Hyacinth or Hyacinthus Orientalis motif. The Hyacinth is an
original salad plate flower. It was changed in 1985 to a different
design with a change to color and butteries. It is very rare to see it on this pedestal dish shape.
This pedestal dish is in excellent shiny condition. The only issue I see are
two leaves in the laurel border that are 'turned over'. Please be sure to
see the full description and photos below. The ID mark is a mustard color
oval which could very likely be due to the small transfer flaw. It also
could be that the Hyacinth was never applied to pedestal dishes and was a 'special decoration' piece.
The dish is very shiny and there is no sign of use, no crazing and no wear.
The compote shape also was retired many years ago, making this a
very desirable Botanic Garden piece. And having the original Eastern Hyacinth version on it is unusual and makes it all the more rare.

The Hyacinth motif was an
original 1972 flower on salad plates and still remains in production today.
There is also an Oriental Hyacinth listed in Portmeirion's Botanic Garden
catalog and shows this motif as retired in 1985. As far as I can tell, they
both have 'Eastern Hyacinth' as the common name and 'Hyacinthus Orientalis'
as the latin name. In 1985 there was a color and insect arrangement change.
The older version (called Oriental) has a more green while the newer (called Eastern)
has a more blue flower. Both motifs are based on an image found in a
1824 botany book, The Universal Herbal by Thomas Green.

An excellent, unusual, and very rare one of a kind Hyacinth pedestal dish!

The bottom is marked with an oval mustard color 2nds ID. It was a one of a
kind special decoration piece but could have been assigned the 2nds ID
because of the two 'turned over' laurel leaves along the rim.
