BOTANIC GARDEN SQUARE COTTON FLOWER COASTER - DARK GREEN BORDER
Unusual Thick BG Coaster - Retired Flower - Excellent!
|
I am happy to present a unique Botanic Garden 4 inch square coaster featuring the
Barbados Cotton Flower surrounded by dark green and gold tone edge. It is thicker than the
usual Portmeirion coaster with a paper (or melamine) top and has a felt
backing. It is much more substantial then the usual cork backed coasters.
It is like
new with the Portmeirion sticker still attached to the back.
The Cotton Flower was originally used in 1972 on oatmeal bowls, then on
bread and butter plates in 1976, and finally retired in 1988. The motif
was based on an antique 1830 botany book Flora Conspicua by
Richard Morris and William Clarke.
The Cotton Flower has gone through several different insect arrangements
over the years. Also, there are varieties with one, two, three, and four
flower heads. This item has one flower head and the colorful orange butterfly
that was present on the last arrangement of this motif.
---> Back Side <---
The surface is a shiny paper (or melamine?) and the base feels like wood. The
black covering material also goes around to cover the sides. The back is
covered with a dark green felt material.
Botanic Garden coasters are usually sold in sets of six in a box, but I believe
these coasters were sold individually.
A sticker on the back says:
PORTMEIRION
Wipe clean after use with a damp soapy cloth. Never immerse in water or
place in dishwashing machines. Backing material not colour fast. Heat
resistant to 85C. Hand made in England.
