VINTAGE PORTMEIRION 8" HIGH YELLOW DOLPHIN SUGAR CANISTER
Large Rare Ceramic Lidded Jar In Bright Yellow! Rare And Hard To Find!
|
I am pleased to offer a vintage nice large, 7 inches across and 8 inches high, Portmeirion Dolphin 'Sugar' jar with a ceramic lid.
It does have some mostly very clean crazing and some pale staining here and
there, but is on overall super condition for its age!
Please see additional photos and a VERY detailed
description below.
Originally in the late 1950's, Dolphin was made by Gray's Pottery just for
Portmeirion. Then in the early 1960's Portmerion bought Gray's Pottery and
continued making Dolphin until the late 1960's.

The pattern came in eight different colors and maybe a few more. There was
yellow, turquoise, lime green, dark green, pink, lavender, gray, and orange. There may have been a few 'one off' colors as well.
This jar is Yellow and it certainly is a very bright yellow! On my monitor, the photo below shows a good match to the actual canister color.

There is a knob on top of the lid which was not meant to have a
sealed lid with a gasket like many newer Portmeirion canisters.

Size |
Nice and large at almost 7" across the top and 8" high
|
Transfer |
There is one Dolphin 'Sugar' transfer on the front of the jar. It is in perfect
condition with no rubbed areas or cuts.
|
Outside Paint |
The bright yellow color is all present with no missing paint or scratches. There is fine and mostly clean crazing over
all, very common on older vintage Portmeirion items There is one pin head sized factory dimple to the left of the Dolphin and a few pin
head sized blue spots of the back. The blue spots look like they might be
from paint that escaped from the ID mark transfer.
From a distance at arms length, it is hard to see any crazing or stains.
The lid is in great condition with just clean crazing on both sides. There is
one very tiny pale blue spot on the edge of the lid, probably from some
paint that got away from the ID mark again. Very small and mentioned to be completely accurate.
On the bottom, some of the crazing lines are stained and there are also a few pea sized spots.
|
Interior Ground |
The inside walls and bottom also has fine crazing. There are some lines and areas that
show pale brown color on the crazing here and there and especially on a short hairline crack
as mentioned below.
On the bottom inside, there are a few spots of pale brownish staining
about the size of a pea. One area is about the size of a quarter. I
wasn't able to get enough photo light into the inside to get a picture of
the pale spots. And, there are two tiny dots of blue paint on the inside wall
that seem to be the same color as the ID mark or got transferred from another piece which as painted blue.

Chips/Cracks |
After soaking in water, I saw a tight hairline crack on the back. It goes
from the top edge to the indentation and stops there. At first look it
appeared to be crazing. Quite minor. It is stable and should not get any
worse. Because of the hairline and crazing, the jar should not be soaked in dishwater for a long period of time.

Stains |
As mentioned above regarding the inside and a little shelf wear on the
bottom. It is remarkably clean considering its age. Please see the photos below.

Use Marks |
Has been used as mentioned above.
